What is EFT?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is an energy healing technique that involves gently tapping meridian points while focusing on a specific issue. EFT is simple to use, and the benefits are often experienced in just a few minutes. EFT is a non-invasive technique and has no known side effects. People all over the world use EFT to overcome their emotional issues.

We know that negative events can result in negative emotions, leading us to the logical conclusion that the negative events caused the negative emotions.

Negative Event = Negative Emotion

For example, if your third-grade class laughed at you when you presented your first book report, you would likely feel embarrassed, afraid, or humiliated. However, not everyone responds the same way to the same event. So how can we explain that difference? EFT is based on the theory that this apparent cause and effect equation is missing one critical element: the body’s energy system.

The foundational statement for EFT is:

“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”

In other words, the negative emotions we feel are the result of blockages in the body’s energy system, or meridian system. The meridian system is a system of pathways that carry energy throughout your body in much the same way that arteries, veins, and capillaries carry blood throughout your body.

So the missing element in our cause and effect equation is the disruption in the body’s energy system.

Negative Event -> Energy Disruption -> Negative Emotion

The energy disruption can be caused by an immediate event (your boss criticizing your most recent project) or by an older event that has left a disruption (your father criticized the way you threw a baseball) that was triggered by the more immediate event. It’s the energy disruption that causes the negative emotion, not the negative event itself.

When our energy system is disrupted, we experience a negative emotion. If we can clear the energy disruption, we can eliminate the negative emotions cased by that energy disruption. Through EFT, we have found that tapping the meridian points can eliminate those energy disruptions, thereby removing the trigger that was causing the negative emotions long after the initial negative event occurred.

Actually, several meridian or energy-based therapies are available today. They include BASF, EMDR, TFT, EFT, and others. Acupuncture also uses the body’s energy meridians for healing, but instead of stimulating the energy points with needles, the meridian tapping therapies only require you to tap lightly on a limited number of meridian points, mostly on the face and upper body, sending tiny waves or pulses through the energy system. When you are focused on a specific issue, the tiny pulses can smooth out the energy disruption from your body. Imagine sand is flowing through an hourglass, and the sand gets stuck. A few gentle taps will often restart the steady flow of sand. EFT works in a similar way. The energy in your body is stuck in certain places, and gentle tapping combined with focused attention on the issue can restart the natural flow of energy.

EFT is a foundational meridian tapping technique developed by Gary Craig.

I encourage you to get some firsthand experience with EFT on a simple issue, like a headache or a food craving. Tapping is easy to learn, and it can truly change your life. However, if you don’t have immediate results, I strongly urge you to try tapping with an expert. The results may surprise you.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

EFT has produced remarkable clinical results, but it has only been used in its current form since the early 1980s. Thus, it is considered by traditional medicine to be in the experimental stage. EFT clients and users must take complete responsibility for their use of these techniques.
